I think its time to start seeing other distributions...

     I have used Ubuntu for nearly 5 years now and it has been my primary desktop OS sense then.  Ubuntu was my first taste of GNU/Linux so I suppose it will always be my first love in the world of open source operating systems.  

     I have never used another GNU/Linux based operating system as a desktop for a long enough period of time to really get a good feel for it.  I have used Debian a few times for servers and have used Fedora enough to be familiar with it.  I got a Gentoo desktop up and running ; I was feeling particularly masochistic one month.
  
    I have no major complaints with Ubuntu.  I mean it has been several releases now and I am still not totally used to the Unity desktop environment.  However, that is only an occasional annoyance and its not like you are stuck with Unity if you use Ubuntu.  But now, I do feel it is time to explore other options for a primary desktop OS.  

     The plan is to give several different distros a try for a month or so, using the distribution as my primary operating system on my old Dell laptop. My usage mainly consists of browsing the internet, occasionally gaming and fiddling with Python and other programing languages when I feel like it, so nothing to intense.

     I have started by installing Arch Linux which I will write about in a later post. I'm planning on giving Debian a try next which I assume will feel very similar to Ubuntu. Any suggestions for other distros to try?

Why I'm running for the parks board

  Two months ago now I declared my candidacy for election to Northern Wasco County Parks and Recreation District Board of Directors Position Number Five.  A mouth full of a title.  I really enjoy our local parks and have no major qualms with the parks district or the current board.  They have done a fine job maintaining and improving existing parks and programs.  So there's question you are probably asking and I am required to ask myself.  Why am I running? Car Sold!

We'll it's done, Ol' Bettsy is no longer parked on the street in front of my house.  I'm sure the neighbours are glad to have one less eye sore to wag their heads at as they drive by. I tried a few different methods to sell my car .  First I tried the social networks.  Selling your crap on Facebook seems very popular these days, plus I liked the idea of selling my car to somebody I actually know.  However, between Google+ and Facebook I had only three inquiries and only one of those I would consider "serious" Finally after giving up on the social route I posted my car on Craigslist.  Good ol' Craigslist brought me 15 email's almost immediately from people wanting to see my car or buy it out right (my favourite was "$400 today no questions!").  I did eventually end up selling it to somebody that found me through Craigslist, a nice couple from Boring who definitely needed the old reliable beast of a car more than I did. Book Review: Tribes

 Tribes  by Seth Godin is a quick read on leadership.  I read this book because it was listed on "Books every leader needs to read" or some such similarly named list.    There are some good bits to glean out of this short book.  I'll try to condense them here:   Managers are not by nature leaders.  Managers allocate resources to accomplish a defined outcome.  Leaders change things by setting a vision and building a tribe around that vision.   Tribes are everywhere big and small.  Mega-tribes, sub-tribes, etc.   Leadership is inherent risky.  But far less risky than our minds tend to think.  This is evidenced by the many failures of several highly successful leaders.  (Think Elon Musk and the Tesla Truck presentation ).   Find people who are doing exceptionally better than average and amplify their influence on everyone else.   Leadership is about challenging the status quo.  It is s...
